The arraignment of Former Governor of Kano State, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau and other party chieftains by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was meant to intimidate the opposition ahead of next year’s election, Bauchi state Chapter of Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) has alleged.
State Publicity Secretary of the party, Yayanuwa Zainabari made the allegation while speaking to journalists in Bauchi.
He alleged that the ruling All Progressives’ Congress (APC) government at both Federal and States levels have been witch-hunting and intimidating the opposition through detentions and arrests to silence them from their constructive criticisms which he said is essential to democracy.
He said that the ‘persecution’ of the former minister of education was undemocratic, adding that every citizen has rights to freedom of expression, association and movement irrespective of their political affiliation.
Zainabari also accused the ruling APC administrations of poor performance since their coming into office in 2015.
According to him, the ruling party only resorted to victimisation of the opposition in order to stop them from demanding good governance and putting pressure on the APC administration at all levels to deliver their campaign promises.
” Let us tell them that PDP will never be intimidated. Arrests, detentions, arraignments and all forms of persecution cannot deter us from speaking the truth and demanding for good governance.
“PDP remains the most principled and formidable party in Nigeria that is determined to enlighten the electorates continuously on the happenings in the country. And we are very optimistic that come 2019, we will bounce back because APC government has failed woefully”. He said.
He implored President Muhammadu Buhari and the Federal Government to put an end to the victimisation and intimidation of the party’s bigwigs.
“It is however worthy to note that if this maltreatment against PDP chieftains continue, the party will not tolerate it. So enough is enough because we are worried with the unfolding events. They should stop that before the situation gets out of hand”. He warned.
