2018 FIFA World Cup: ‘Nigeria won’t be easy for Argentina’, Diego Maradona admits

Former Argentina Captain and World Cup winner, Diego Maradona has given Nigeria hope of defeating his country at this year’s World Cup, as he believes La Albiceleste are going to the competition without a leader.

Though Argentina have triumphed on all their previous four meetings with Nigeria in the past World Cup matches, Maradona is worried that the Super Eagles will finally break the jinx this year in Russia.

Nigeria will face Argentina in their final Group D fixture at Krestovsky Stadium, Saint Petersburg on June 26, ahead of which Maradona, who coached the Albiceleste at the South Africa 2010 World Cup, again criticized the team’s manager, Jorge Sampaoli for his choice of players.

The Napoli hero, who was banned for drugs after leading Argentina to beat Nigeria at USA 94, admitted that he is very skeptical about Argentina’s chances because of the manager’s tactics and acknowledged that the Super Eagles, Iceland and Croatia will not be easy opponents.

“I have many doubts, many doubts. Hopefully it goes well already in the first round. It’s Iceland, Nigeria and Croatia, and it’s not easy, it’s not easy.

“With a team that has no experience, that has no leader, that has no game plan. It seems to me that we are risking a lot of prestige, that we win, and that we are throwing it away.

“I got news from Argentina that he wants to play 2-3-3-2. It’s ridiculous, it was played in 1930,” the football legend admitted.

Meanwhile Argentina have replaced injured goalkeeper Sergio Romero with Nahuel Guzman. Guzman, 32, plays for Tigres, an Argentine second division side. He has been capped six times by the two-time World Champions.
